We continue to work on our foundational training.
More work on hip control, pivoting, sidepassing and certainly more work on obstacles which BigTime seems to love!
BigTime is a much lower energy horse than my last years SEMM horse "Time to Shine" ,funny how different all of these horses are from one another!
Whereas I was constantly trying to channel her energy in a positive way, I am trying to find BigTime's energy so I can work with it to the best of both of our abilities.
He is a doll and I know I am blessed to have him as my teacher for this year!

Week 4 - After the Crash
I decided the best thing to do was a ton more of groundwork to prepare BigTime(and me too!) for cantering.
After careful consideration I made the decision to head to my trainer friend Dan Keen's place for a safer setting for cantering.
Dan's arena has iron rails and very soft sand for softer landings!
Being the ex-bronc rider that he is Dan decided he would like a shot at helping us through our cantering dilemma.
After much drama about accepting a new rider and a couple of buck offs later we both came to the conclusion that BigTime had the habit of ditching to the right and losing his rider.
It was interesting to watch as he bounced back and forth between being fearful and flat out belligerent about the idea of cantering with someone on his back.
I have no problem in admitting that Dan can sit a bronc better than I can and that ability became a blessing as he rode him through some bucks that probably would have lost me!
It was very important to show BigTime that bucking was not the answer and continuing to dump his rider would taught him the opposite.
In the end after a couple of rodeo sessions we were back on track and I could begin to tell that BigTime had made the change to enjoying the freedom of cantering!
That is the wonderful thing about the Extreme Mustang Makeovers, the access that it gives us trainers to each other and the wonderful sense of family that comes along with it!
I believe it should never be considered a weakness to seek anothers advice or ask for a hand in figuring out a problem. It's what life is about joining hands to help one another.
In the end I had a wonderful time at Dan Keen's place and will treasure the time spent there with him and his family. He's a great guy and quite a hoot to be around!

Week 3
BigTime has been doing so well I decided that it was time for Dr. Shafer to come out and do some accupuncture and chiropractic work.
Good thing as he had ribs out on each side, his poll was out and his pelvis was locked.
Dr Shafer gave the ok to go ahead and ride that same evening so I warmed him up and boy did he feel better. So much better that when asked to canter for the first time in the arena he took off like a rocket running full speed and crashed through the fence taking out sixteen feet of arena and ended the ride with a huge buck off! Thanks Dr. Shafer!!! Lol!
Just goes to show you no matter how quiet horses may seem in the beginning there's always something to overcome. Sometimes it's something small like a fear of tarps and sometimes it's something big like a fear of cantering!
Though shaken we were fine. Guess we have a little more work to do!

Week 2
Week 2 and the journey continues...BigTime continues to be very accepting of most everything I present to him and is quite the quick learner. We have gone from first ride to riding on the beach in no time whatsoever!
Even so, we are still spending equal time improving our groundwork and on groundriving to help make him as solid and confident horse as possible for in the future.
I can't stress enough the importance of taking things slow in the beginning and making sure that a strong foundation is in place!
